Unprofitability over time

Here, we present the financial sustainability of each country's fossil fuel power fleet, capturing both coal and gas. This assessment considers long-run marginal costs, current power prices, and potential sources of revenue.

The charts reveal how the (un)profitability of fossil-fuelled units evolves over time, factoring in aging, declining efficiency, maintenance, and compliance with stricter environmental standards.

Notes

Profitability for each power unit is calculated by comparing long-term operational costs with current market prices and extra-market revenues. We assume today's power prices for future projections but acknowledge that renewable energy trends and market fluctuations could affect this stability.

Increasing costs due to aging infrastructure, diminishing efficiency, and regulatory compliance are anticipated. The chart illustrates the profitability trend for each unit over time, with the unprofitability axis indicating the percentage of non-profitable units from the whole fleet.
